Should Your Skin Go Vegan, Gluten-Free and Organic Too?
With so much of what we put on our skin being absorbed into our bodies, it’s worth considering what that means for our health, writes Cat Woods.
You drink fair trade organic coffee. You line up at lunchtime for your organic, GM-free quinoa and tofu salad. If there’s a vegan, raw food, paleo cafe within a 10-kilometre radius, they know your name. So why don’t you apply that same non-toxic approach to your skincare and makeup?
Our skin is our largest organ, and while it is extremely resilient, up to 60% of the products we put on our skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Going Green: The Truth About Natural Beauty Products
All natural beauty products have become somewhat of a craze in the past few years, but are they really chemical-free or are cosmetic companies simply greenwashing? There’s no doubt we’ve become more conscious of what we’re putting on our face and body in recent times – and cosmetic companies have responded in droves. An array of organic and natural skincare and make-up products now line chemist, department store and supermarket shelves to cater for the high demand. In fact, the organic cosmetics and toiletries industry in Australia grew by almost 18 per cent annually between 2009 and 2014, with revenue now at $236 million, according to IBIS World.

Buyer Beware
Would you risk rashes and scars to save money on skincare products? Would you willingly put toxic chemicals into your body? “Irritation, rash, burns, pigmentation and even skin dyeing are just some of the shocking results we have seen from the use of counterfeit cosmetics,” says Kimberly Nissen, editor of Australian beauty blog, The Plastic Diaries.

What is your child’s skin really absorbing?
Every child enjoys dressing up but they should not be playing with just any old make up. The three top ingredients SCA advise to avoid include. Amina Leslie, Director of SCA says, “Every child enjoys dressing up but they should not be playing with just any old make up. You really have no way of knowing what is in the products you purchase unless you buy a trusted brand or those that have received our Australian Certified Non-Toxic stamp.” Amina adds, “As the skin is the largest organ in the body, anything we put on it has more significant effects for children, who have a much lower tolerance to toxins compared to adults.”

Toxic Taint Drives Cosmetic Change
Confused by makeup scare stories? Worried that lead in your lipstick and arsenic in your mascara might be damaging your health? It might be time to ditch. “Heavy metals are in our face makeup and consumers have no way of knowing about it,” said the report, which called for consumers to choose safer products and cosmetics companies to fully disclose ingredients. “For some of these metals, science has not established a ‘safe’ level of exposure.” Heavy metals can build up in the body over time and can cause health problems including cancer, reproductive disorders, neurological problems, memory loss, mood swings, contact dermatitis and hair loss, said the report.

The benefits of natural ingredients in skin care products
When it comes to putting our best faces forward and choosing what cosmetics to use on our skin, self education is the key. More good than harm? Being aware of the ingredients you apply to your skin is crucial. “Most people would agree that ‘we are what we eat’, so feeding your skin with natural ingredients is vital if you are concerned about maintaining your health,” says Amina Kitching, professional makeup artist and stylist and Founder of safe Cosmetics Australia. “It is certainly true that what we put on our skin is readily absorbed into the body and, unfortunately, the negative consequences are endless. Not nearly enough has been done to research the side-effects of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and I certainly see no sense in the use of such chemicals in skin and beauty care products.”
